The incident has drawn mixed reactions online, with some expressing sympathy for the grandmother’s situation and questioning whether jail time was the appropriate response to someone clearly struggling to survive.
This is not the first time that economic hardship has pushed individuals to commit petty crimes.
In a similar case earlier this year, a man in Quezon City was arrested for stealing a can of corned beef and a loaf of bread.
He told authorities he hadn’t eaten in two days.
Meanwhile, in Davao, another elderly woman was caught attempting to steal a pack of diapers and baby formula for her grandchild.
These incidents highlight the growing concerns around poverty and food insecurity in the Philippines.
Many netizens have called for more compassionate approaches to petty theft, especially when committed out of desperation rather than malice.
Authorities have yet to announce if social welfare agencies will step in to assist the grandmother, who now faces charges despite the small value of the stolen items.
News, photos or videos that arouse the interest of netizens would often go viral on social media, due to the attention netizens give them. These viral posts appeal to the emotions of netizens, and in rare cases, such could also happen to ordinary people, making them very relatable to just about simply everyone around.
In other news, thirty-one policemen are in hot water after they were accused of robbing a Chinese in Las Piñas. The personnel concerned are from the Eastern Police District Special Operations Unit. Based on the video shared by ABS-CBN News, empty cases of expensive watches were left strewn on the floor and that the CCTV inside the home of the Chinese who was served with a warrant were allegedly destroyed. The alleged sum of the items, including cash, that were allegedly taken by the policemen was at P85 million.
Meanwhile in news abroad, Chinese state media aired footage of three Filipinos allegedly confessing to spying for the Philippine intelligence agency. ABS-CBN reported that Manila asserts the individuals are civilians and suspects the arrests are retaliation for its crackdown on Chinese spies. NSC spokesperson Jonathan Malaya questioned the validity of the confessions, saying the agencies mentioned don’t exist. Palawan officials said the accused were former government scholars under a China-Philippines educational exchange.
