The incident, which involved the dragging of the injured shark ashore, has sparked outrage and calls for greater awareness regarding marine wildlife protection.

According to reports from GMA Regional TV News, the incident occurred in Barangay Cabayawa, Tubay, and not in the neighboring Barangay Caasinan in Cabadbaran City, as initially reported.

Mistaking the shark for a blue marlin, individuals proceeded to pull the animal by its tail, dragging it onto land.

It was at this point that they recognized it was a shark. Video footage captured residents striking the shark's head with a tree branch. The shark, which exhibited visible injuries, subsequently died.

BFAR-13's official statement revealed that the shark had a “hook” in its mouth and injuries to its head and tail.

Furthermore, the shark was in the process of giving birth. Authorities successfully recovered 29 of the 30 shark “pups,” or babies, and released them into the sea.

BFAR-13 emphasized the vital role sharks play in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

“Sharks serve as apex predators, regulating the balance of marine life by keeping populations of prey species in check. Their presence ensures the stability of marine biodiversity, which in turn supports the productivity of our local fisheries and the overall health of our coastal waters,” the agency stated.

The agency further expressed concern regarding the ecological impact of the shark's death, particularly as it was a pregnant female.

“The loss of these key species, especially a pregnant female, disrupts the ecological balance and may negatively impact our marine resources and affect the livelihoods of the coastal communities,” BFAR-13 added.

BFAR-13 issued a stern warning to the public, reminding them that the killing, catching, harming, or selling of protected shark species and other marine wildlife is illegal and punishable under the Philippine Fisheries Code.

While the report noted the shark was nine feet long, it did not specify the exact shark species.

BFAR-13 has urged local government units, fisherfolk, and coastal communities to prioritize the protection of marine wildlife.

The agency has committed to strengthening its efforts through education, law enforcement, and collaborative partnerships to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“As such, DA-BFAR urges local government units, fisherfolk, and coastal communities to respect and protect marine wildlife. The Regional Bureau remains committed to strengthening its efforts through education, law enforcement, and partnerships to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the agency said.

Officials reminded the public about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a short time, due to risks like heatstroke.

Still in other news, a student was robbed in Brgy. Calzada, Taguig City, with the suspect, even getting the student to ride with him on the motorcycle. CCTV footage showed that the actuations of both the rider and the student were normal, not giving a hint of the commission of a robbery. Thereafter, the student alighted from the motorcycle, and as the suspect drove off, it could be seen that he put something in his pocket, presumably the cellphone he took from the student. The victim revealed to GMA News that he was initially on his way to pick up a friend, when the suspect asked him about three persons whom he knew, and even sought his help to "locate" them.
