The NBI's intervention was prompted by a video message and photographs received on March 11, in which the three Filipinos appealed for assistance from the NBI and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The images depicted the physical injuries sustained by the victims.

The victims reported that they had responded to a job advertisement for customer service representatives in Cambodia, promising a monthly salary of $1,000.

However, their journey to Cambodia involved irregular and perilous travel. On January 7, they traveled to Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, and then proceeded by boat to Basilan and Tawi-Tawi.

The NBI detailed the victims' arduous journey, which included traveling from Tawi-Tawi in small boats, being transferred to a fishing vessel, and eventually reaching Sabah, Malaysia.

They were subsequently transported to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and confined to a compound under the strict orders of their Chinese employers.

Contrary to their initial expectations, the victims were not employed as customer service representatives.

The promised salary of $1,000 was drastically reduced to $300. When the victims attempted to seek alternative employment, their Chinese employers discovered their plans.

The NBI reported that the victims were then taken outside the compound and subjected to physical assault by Chinese individuals. The NBI is continuing its investigation into this case.
