Residents in the area had previously reported missing pets, mostly chickens, suspected to be the work of a python that always managed to escape.

This time, however, after consuming an animal as large as a pig, the snake was too full to leave the pen, leading to its capture.

Burgos immediately contacted the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Caraga to take the python away.

Although he initially hoped his pet might still be saved, it was too late.

Authorities reportedly assured him that his pig would be replaced.

According to Kuya Kim, the culprit was a reticulated python.

"Ika-cut off nila 'yung blood circulation [ng victim] and then, kapag namatay na siya or nanghina na siya, lulunukin na lang ito," explained herpetologist Jazz Ong, describing how pythons consume prey.

Pythons can swallow animals much larger than their heads due to elastic tissues connecting their cranium and lower jaw.

"That enables them to stretch their mouths to consume prey that's much larger than their heads," Ong added.
