Last Friday, February 28, just before 7:00 PM, a trailer truck experienced an alleged brake failure, leading to a collision with utility poles.
The truck, carrying a cargo of potatoes, had departed from a local pier and was en route to a cold storage facility.
According to statements from the truck’s driver and assistant, the vehicle’s braking system malfunctioned as it traveled along the service road, causing the truck to accelerate rapidly.

“Exhaust brake ginamit ko na, trailer brake, ayaw. Talagang lumusong na, tumulin na. Hindi na makontrol. Wala na akong ibang paraan. Kaysa naman bungguin ko ‘yung dalawang kotse, binungo ko na lang dito sa poste,” the truck’s driver, William Tanao, said.
The incident resulted in injuries to two children who were present at the location of the collision.
The truck driver, William Tanao, stated that he attempted to engage both the exhaust and trailer brakes, but the vehicle remained uncontrollable.
Faced with the risk of colliding with other vehicles, Mr. Tanao directed the truck towards the utility poles in an effort to minimize potential harm.
The truck assistant, Norvin Colande, provided additional details, stating that the truck initially collided with a jeepney, which then hit the children.

The injured children were promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Representatives of the truck driver’s employer have indicated a willingness to cover the medical expenses incurred by the affected families and have issued apologies to those involved.
The collision caused substantial damage to the electrical infrastructure, necessitating the replacement of two utility poles.
This damage resulted in a temporary power outage affecting approximately 2,600 households in the vicinity on Friday night.
Local residents, particularly association presidents, have expressed ongoing concerns regarding the steep incline of the road.
They have reportedly made requests for the installation of traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps or other road stoppers, to mitigate the risk of future accidents in the area.
The local residence feel that the down hill grade of the street is a hazard to all that travel upon it.
This incident has prompted discussions regarding road safety and infrastructure maintenance in the area.
