Alice Guo lawyer can't assure attendance of client at Senate because court has acquired jurisdiction

Alice Guo’s highly anticipated attendance at the hearings conducted by the Senate isn’t assured, according to her lawyer, Atty. Stephen David.

This was because the Tarlac Regional Trial Court (RTC) has already acquired jurisdiction over the dismissed official.

It can be recalled that the Guo, until the time she left the Philippines on July 17, has been attending hearings conducted by the Senate on POGO and other related issues, some of which were allegedly various illegal activities.

When she failed to attend the Senate hearings, the sub-committees conducting the hearings issued a Senate warrant for her arrest.

She was able to leave the Philippines, which according to some sources was on July 17, though was arrested in September 4 in Jakarta, Indonesia, by Indonesian authorities.

Guo was then turned over to Philippine authorities and brought back to the Philippines.

Senator Riza Hontiveros earlier issued a statement saying they’re expecting Guo to be present now at the Senate hearings.

It was this particular Senate hearing that Atty. David might have been referring to, which he said his client might not be able to attend because the court has already acquired jurisdiction over her.

In a September 5 report by the Inquirer, it stated that the Tarlac Regional Trial Court Branch 109 has issued a warrant of arrest for alleged violation of some provisions of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

It has also set the bail for a total of P180,000, or P90,000 each for violation of Section 3 (e) and (h), for Guo’s temporary liberty.

Alice Leal Guo is the Mayor of the Municipality of Bamban, Tarlac. She won as mayor during the national elections in 2022. She became known nationwide after her name was dragged into the ongoing Senate investigations regarding Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations or (POGO) and the alleged proliferation of illegal immigrants. Her name has been the subject of many online memes since then.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, in a press conference a couple of days ago regarding the arrest of Mayor Alice Guo, said the embattled local chief executive has no right to impose any condition. Earlier today, news about the arrest of Mayor Guo in Indonesia spread like wildfire online. No details of the arrest were given as of now, though Sen. Risa, in a press conference, said Mayor Guo has an obligation to the government and the people to submit to her warrants of arrest. Sen. Risa also pointed out that Mayor Guo has three standing warrants of arrest.

Earlier, the Senator issued a fiery statement after the arrival of Alice Guo in the country. The senator shared her frank thoughts on the viral photos of Guo following her arrest. Hontiveros stressed they want answers from Guo, not a “photoshoot.” She likewise aired a gentle reminder addressed to government officials.
