A Filipino-American police officer died in a fiery car crash while in the middle of a legitimate police operation.

Officer Austin Machitar, a 30-year-old cop assigned at the San Diego Police Department in California, died at the scene of the collision after the police SUV cruiser he’s driving crashed into another vehicle and burst into flames.

In a report by the US Bureau of Inquirer, it quoted authorities as saying that Machitar was pursuing a motorist who allegedly fled a late-night traffic stop.

It wasn’t clear if the Machitar and his fellow police officer, Zach Martinez, were the same cops who flagged down the BMW vehicle of the motorist.

A report by GMA News network say that the motorist also died from the collision, while Martinez was thrown off their police cruiser through the windshield because of the strong impact.

Police authorities say Machitar died on the spot.

In another report by ABS-CBN, Martinez remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Emmy award-winning Filipino-American journalist Maria Arcega-Dunn posted on her Facebook page mourning the death of Machitar, saying that it was difficult for her as the police officer is a member of the Pinoy community.

The mom helped 4-year-old Kent practice writing since he could not play until he finishes tracing the letters. Apparently, he really did not like writing, but could not do anything about it.
