The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), currently headed by Lala Sotto, recently made headlines with its decision to suspend the popular television show "It's Showtime." However, the board clarified that the suspension and the ongoing "no work, no pay" issue involving irregular workers are two separate matters.
In an official statement, the MTRCB emphasized that the suspension serves as a spotlight on the more significant issue of contractualization within the entertainment industry. The practice of not regularizing employees, even when a show has been airing live for six days a week for over a decade, highlights a pervasive problem that extends beyond the show's 12-day suspension, the MTRCB stated.
The board expressed its empathy for the hardworking individuals who will be affected by the suspension but stressed that the alleged inability of the show's management to provide regular employment should not deter the MTRCB from fulfilling its mandate. The MTRCB's role is to ensure ethical compliance in broadcasting content, as outlined in Presidential Decree No. 1986.
Furthermore, the MTRCB clarified that the suspension or discipline of the show's hosts falls within the prerogative of the producer and management, and hosts are beyond the jurisdiction of the MTRCB.

In another report, the MTRCB also released a statement regarding its decision to slap a 12-day suspension on the noontime show, “It’s Showtime.” According to the MTRCB statement, Chairperson Lala did not participate in the voting process so the board could render an impartial decision. The regulatory body also assured the public that they will remain fair and just as regards their decision.

Previously, MTRCB Chair Lala also granted showbiz reporter Ogie Diaz an interview. One of the topics they discussed during the interview is the supposed video clip of Lala’s parents, Tito Sotto and Helen Gamboa, on “E.A.T.” She clarified that even if they’re her parents and they are connected to “E.A.T.,” she would require them to obey rules and policies by the MTRCB. She also explained to Ogie the process of how MTRCB checks and decides complaints regarding shows alleged to be in violation of the regulatory body’s rules.
