The Kapuso actress first revealed on May 26 that she had been targeted with a threat of s*xual violence online. While Pineda said she has grown accustomed to criticism and online negativity throughout her career, she stressed that the message she received crossed a line.

Speaking during the nationwide premiere of "Open Endings" on Monday, Pineda explained why she decided to publicly address the issue.

“And okay na rin 'yun na nag-speak up ako. Minsan lang ako magsalita sa social media about sa mga bashing, about sa mga threats na ganiyan, and this time, hindi ko na pinalagpas kasi sobra-sobra na 'yun. Walang may deserve nang ganoong klasing message, kahit sino,” she said.

According to the actress, her family played a significant role in encouraging her to take action against the person responsible.

When asked whether she intends to pursue legal action, Pineda expressed hope that the plan will move forward.

“Sana, sana. 'Yun 'yung plan. Hahanapin natin 'yung mga 'yan,” she said.

The incident also drew strong condemnation from the people behind "Open Endings," Pineda’s Cinemalaya film. In a statement, the production team emphasized that threats of s*xual violence should never be treated as jokes or normalized under any circumstance.

“Threats of s*xual violence are never a joke, never acceptable, and never something that should be normalized especially against members of the LGBTQIA+ community who continue to face harassment, discrimination, and violence simply for existing openly and truthfully,” the statement read.

The group further stressed that Pineda, along with other members of the LGBTQIA+ community, deserves protection, dignity, and safety.

Pineda’s co-star Janella Salvador also voiced her outrage over the incident. Salvador, who has likewise spoken out against colorist and lesbophobic comments online, said she was deeply angered by what happened.

“Mas galit ako. Mas galit ako kesa sa kaniya, siyempre,” Salvador said.
“Nobody deserves that, and it's time na these people who feel comfortable saying things like that on the internet, hiding behind fake accounts, I think it's time that they learn their lesson,” she added.

Pineda and Salvador headline "Open Endings" alongside Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Leanne Mamonong. The sapphic film became the highest-grossing entry in Cinemalaya last year and is set for nationwide release beginning Wednesday.

Salvador said the wider release is both exciting and nerve-wracking as they hope to reach more viewers and share the film’s message with a larger audience.

“We're able to reach a bigger audience. Medyo nakakakaba siya, pero hopefully mga, ma-send namin 'yung message na there is an audience for this,” Salvador said.
