Quezon City 4th District Representative Jesus “Bong” Suntay has publicly apologized for using a se*xually suggestive example involving actress-host Anne Curtis during a House impeachment hearing this week.

Suntay explained that his intention was to defend Vice President Sara Duterte against an “imagined” threat toward President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., but he admitted the se*xual fantasy “should not” have been used to make a point.

“There could have been a better analogy,” he told ABS-CBN News’ Karen Davila on ANC.

“Nag-a-apologize ako sa mga taong nasaktan. That analogy should not have been made,” he said.

He acknowledged the backlash, adding, “That mistake has been made… May backlash 'yan. I deserve the backlash.”

Since Tuesday, Suntay has faced criticism from lawmakers, women’s organizations, celebrities, and the public. Some called for disciplinary action by the House of Representatives.

When asked about a potential ethics complaint, he said he would respect the decisions of his colleagues.

“If they want to file an ethics complaint, if they want to judge me, the person that I am, based from one particular statement, I respect it,” he said.

Caloocan Second District Representative Edgar Erice suggested that a sanction might be unnecessary.

“It would be unfair for the Quezon City lawmaker to face sanctions for just one mistake,” Erice said, noting that ethics complaints regarding other lawmakers have been pending for months.

He added that “a reprimand is enough” and that an apology should suffice.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Commission on Women labeled Suntay’s remarks as “hallmarks of gender-based se*xual harassment” under the Safe Spaces Act.

“And when it comes from a public official, it is a serious betrayal of public trust and a violation of the law,” the commission said.
