Speaking at the red carpet premiere of his comeback film, Breaking the Silence, in Quezon City on Saturday, the former Hashtag member offered a raw look into his past.
He confessed that becoming a father at the tender age of 15 brought an initial wave of dismay and a sense of lost opportunity.
"Aaminin ko, noong una talaga ng nanghinayang ako… May pagsisisi ng una," Cariño revealed to reporters, reflecting on the controversy that surrounded his relationship with volleyball star EJ Laure. "Pero nang dumating baby ko—mas naging kampante utak ko na mas mag focus ako sa family ko."

The couple, whose relationship sparked intense public scrutiny due to their four-year age gap—Laure was 19 and Cariño was 15 when their daughter Scarlet was born—faced a barrage of criticism when they publicly confirmed their family status in 2020.
Now that Scarlet is seven years old, Cariño says his perspective has completely shifted.
"Habang tumagal na-realize ko gift siya ni God. Blessing siya," he said. " Kumbaga ng time na iyon, mas marami blessing pumasok sakin. Inalis ko na sa isip regrets ko o na nagsisisi ako."
The young actor emphasized that the experience forced him to mature faster than his peers. The transition from a teen star to a family man taught him selflessness.
"Natuto ako unahin family ko kaysa sa sarili ko, kumbaga yung pangarap ko para sa kanila," he explained, adding a spiritual reflection that " Walang bibigay si God na pagsubok, blessing, o gift na hindi natin kaya. Para sa atin talaga."
Beyond the internal struggle, Cariño also opened up about the external pressure. He admitted that while he had stepped away from the limelight, the online bashing was relentless.
Having grown up in the entertainment industry, Cariño took it upon himself to shield Laure, who was accustomed to the sports world but not the vitriol of showbiz gossip.
"Given na yung basher. Ang pinaka-finocus ko yung wife ko. Hindi sanay sa mga sinasabi ng tao. Volleyball world siya eh. Ako sanay na. Parang nasanay ako kasi showbiz—ginuide ko wife ko para malagpasan mga sinabi ng mga tao," he stated.
His advice to her was pragmatic: ignoring the hate prevents it from consuming you, and ironically, bashers only help increase public visibility.
Today, Cariño has found stability outside of traditional television. He has successfully pivoted to the digital economy, establishing online selling as his primary "bread and butter."
He expressed gratitude for the loyal customers who have supported his business, noting that he enjoys the hustle.
However, the itch to perform remains. With Breaking the Silence, Cariño is eager to prove that he still has a place in the acting world.
"Gusto ko na rin umarte. Gusto ko makita ulit ng tao acting ko," he concluded. " Na miss ko magbasa ng script. Getting in character, isipin pano i-handle, at gagawin ng maganda."
A former Star Circle Kid Quest champion, Bugoy Cariño initially gained fame through the sketch comedy program Goin' Bulilit before joining the Hashtags dance crew on It's Showtime. His spouse, EJ Laure, is a celebrated athlete recognized for her standout career as a star volleyball player for the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses.
Last year, following his wedding to volleyball star EJ Laure, former child actor Bugoy Cariño opened up about his transition into life as a husband. In a heart-to-heart with the press, the actor described the immense joy and fulfillment he feels now that they have officially solidified their union. Cariño noted that the couple’s dynamic has evolved into a more "laid-back" and open relationship since they legally committed to one another. The pair’s much-anticipated church ceremony took place on March 9, 2025, held in the picturesque setting of Silang, Cavite.
Previously, Scarlet, the daughter of celebrity duo Bugoy Cariño and EJ Laure, reached a significant milestone as she celebrated her seventh birthday. To mark the special occasion, the devoted parents organized a charming and memorable party filled with love and festive details for their child. Bugoy took to his digital platforms to post a series of tender snapshots, giving fans a glimpse into the joyful family celebration. Adding a personal touch to the festivities, the actor shared a moving and highly emotional message dedicated to his daughter on her big day.
