The revelation, made during a one-on-one interview with MJ Felipe on Cinema One, unveiled a fascinating, human story rooted in the emotional exhaustion of intense acting.
Angelica, fondly called "Angge," was asked if there was any project in her long career she regretted declining.
Without hesitation, she smiled and named the beloved family dramedy, which starred Bea Alonzo, Toni Gonzaga, Angel Locsin, and Shaina Magdayao.
“Meron, ‘yung Four Sisters,” Angge said.
Angelica confirmed she was originally offered the role of Gabbie Salazar, the character eventually portrayed by Magdayao.
The true reason behind the rejection, however, was less about scheduling and more about emotional preservation.
Angelica explained that the decision came right after she had completed the heavy 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival entry, One More Try.
That film, directed by Ruel Bayani, required her to share deeply intense and physical scenes with co-star Angel Locsin, alongside actors Dingdong Dantes and Zanjoe Marudo.
"Hindi naging maganda ang ending namin ni Angel nu’n," Angelica explained, speaking metaphorically about the dramatic intensity and possible lingering tension between the two actresses.
The sheer emotional investment required for One More Try led Angelica to ask for a temporary break from working opposite Locsin.
"So, nag-give way na lang ako," she shared, "Sabi ko, ‘maging magkaibigan na lang tayo sa labas ng trabaho, ‘wag muna tayong mag-work ulit.’"
This request for professional distance prompted her to decline the role in Four Sisters, a film which Locsin had already signed on to.
While the two stars have since maintained that they settled any rumored differences—which included fan speculation in 2014 about their on-screen sampalan (slapping) scenes potentially extending off-screen—the impact of that period remains palpable for Angelica.
The actress admitted that the regret runs so deep she still cannot bring herself to watch the iconic film.
“Hanggang ngayon hindi ko pa pinapanood ang pelikulang ‘yun dahil bubog ko ‘yun!” she confessed, a statement that clearly surprised her interviewer, MJ Felipe, who had hosted the mediacon for her current MMFF entry, UnMarry.
The weight of this past rejection now informs her career choices. Angelica noted during the earlier UnMarry press conference with co-star Zanjoe Marudo that once she read the script for her current project, she was determined not to let it go, specifically because she did not want to experience that feeling of profound regret again.
Angelica Panganiban’s latest film, UnMarry, which also features Zanjoe Marudo and is directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, is one of the official entries for the Metro Manila Film Festival 2025 and is scheduled to open in cinemas nationwide on Christmas Day.
The film focuses on the emotional complexities of divorce, a heavy theme she seems prepared to tackle now, having found peace and joy in her personal life.
