Years before he became a senator, Robin Padilla was known as the “Bad Boy of Philippine cinema,” a reputation built during his heyday as an action star. Now that he’s in politics and working on new film projects under a renewed deal with his old studio, he’s eager to put behind another label — that of a “playboy.” In a recent interview, Padilla made it clear: those rumors, he said, were just part of the showbiz package.

Regarding the “playboy” image associated with him during his showbiz peak, Padilla didn’t mince words: Napagbintangan lang ako diyan.” He insisted that the rumors had no basis in truth and were largely a marketing strategy common in the entertainment industry. He said in real life, he’s “mabait.”

He added that in movies — especially action films — romantic subplots with leading ladies were almost unavoidable. As he quipped, that casting choice, and not his personal lifestyle, sparked the rumors. “Kasama lang sa packaging yan nung araw,” he said, and reassured that he did not court his on-screen partners.

Despite his past, Padilla said he’s grateful to people who believed in his talent, especially Vic del Rosario, whom he called his “father in showbiz.” He credited him for giving him a chance when others doubted him. Now, as Padilla returns to the big screen with new projects and at the same time serves the public as a senator, he hopes people will see that he’s no longer the reckless action star, but someone who has matured and changed.

Padilla also expressed interest in working again with some of his former leading ladies — names like Sharon Cuneta and Vina Morales — while reassuring the public and his fans that he remains loyal and grounded. PhilNews+1
