Speaking at the launch of a new pet wellness brand in Pasay City, Liza detailed how bringing her dog, Yuna, and rescuing five cats in Los Angeles transformed her outlook and taught her a deeper meaning of compassion.
The actress, who has relocated to the US to pursue Hollywood opportunities, admitted that living alone in Los Angeles can often feel isolating.
She explained that having her dog, Yuna, a fluffy Samoyed, by her side was not just a convenience, but a necessity for her well-being.
“She keeps me company, obviously. Being in LA and living on my own, it can get pretty lonely,” Liza shared. “The fact that she’s there keeps me busy because I have a responsibility to take care of her, but also, I have a lot of fun with her. I go on hikes, I go to the dog park, I take her on little retreats sometimes. I don’t think I would be doing any of that otherwise if I didn’t have her around.”
The actress explained that the shift in location also meant taking on the full, unshared responsibility of pet ownership, something she didn't fully experience while in the Philippines where a robust support system was available.
“When I got Yuna, I was here in the Philippines. I was very blessed to have a lot of support. I had people who helped me take care of her,” she recalled. “But when I moved to LA and because I am living on my own, I had to take responsibility for doing everything for her—walking her, washing her, feeding her, and everything.”
Beyond keeping the loneliness at bay and establishing a daily routine, Liza credits her canine companion with fostering profound personal growth.
“I think she’s just taught me to be so much more loving,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “She’s just a sweetheart and she’s just so genuine and kind. She makes me so happy. And because of that, I feel like I have so much love and care to give.”
That surplus of love recently extended to a new, unexpected passion: felines. Liza rescued a mother cat and her four kittens off the streets of LA last September, transforming her into a self-professed "cat mom."
“Which is exactly why I rescued five cats! I keep on saying it, but I’m really obsessed with my cats now,” she confessed, laughing at the irony. “I never thought I would be a cat mom. I didn’t used to believe I liked cats, but now I’m obsessed with them.”
Looking ahead, the actress, who has also ventured into producing, expressed a dream of immortalizing her primary muse on screen.
"If the opportunity presents itself, I would love to be in a movie or a TV show with Yuna because then, she would be immortalized forever in that film or TV show," she said, before jokingly adding, "Because I am now producing films, I might just put her in something!"
Liza briefly returned to Manila to fulfill her duties as a celebrity ambassador for a pet food brand, a decision she made gladly due to her genuine commitment to animal wellness.
She even revealed that her picky, rescued cats had given the new treats an "A-plus" rating, validating her advocacy.
