Ruru Madrid admits surprise over sister Rere’s relationship with Kai Sotto

Actor Ruru Madrid shared his surprise upon discovering that his sister, Rere Madrid, is in a relationship with Filipino basketball player Kai Sotto.

During their guest appearance on Fast Talk With Boy Abunda on Monday, Rere revealed that she never planned to keep Kai’s courtship a secret from her older brother.

“Pero 'yung time kasi na naging kami ni Kai, sobrang busy ni Kuya. Actually noong nandito si Kai parang twice lang yata sila nagkita,” she explained.

Ruru, while expressing admiration for Kai’s basketball career, admitted that he found the revelation a bit unusual.

“So noong nalaman ko na girlfriend niya 'yung utol ko parang medyo na-weirduhan ako pero at least 'di ba makikita ko siya sa personal. In fairness, mabuting tao si Kai,” the actor said.

He also acknowledged being a protective older brother when it came to his sisters’ suitors.

“Before kasi naging sobrang higpit ako kay Rere and actually kay Rara din,” he said, adding that his girlfriend Bianca Umali helped him realize the importance of giving his siblings freedom.

Kai and Rere made their relationship public at the 2024 GMA Gala and marked their first anniversary as a couple in May. Kai is currently playing for Japan’s Koshigaya Alphas in the B.League.

Ruru Madrid is a Filipino actor, singer, and model best known for his roles in GMA Network’s television dramas. He first gained recognition as a finalist in the reality talent show Protégé: The Battle for the Big Artista Break in 2012. Since then, Ruru has starred in numerous TV series, including the fantasy-adventure series Lolong, where he played the titular role. He is in a relationship with actress Bianca Umali, and their pairing has been well-received by fans.

Previously, Ruru Madrid shared an emotional farewell on social media as filming for GMA’s action series Lolong has officially ended. He recalled the many challenges faced during production, including an injury that required changes to the storyline.

As previously reported by KAMI, Ruru Madrid just penned the ultimate love letter for his partner, Bianca Umali. On Instagram, Ruru uploaded a series of photos from Bianca's recent birthday party. He then wrote a lovely birthday note for her in the caption.

Meanwhile, Ruru Madrid said his wedding scene in 'Black Rider' is perhaps the most difficult he has done so far. According to the actor, they shot the whole wedding scene in the course of around two weeks. The actor then expressed his gratitude to the staff.
