Darryl Yap is a Filipino filmmaker, screenwriter, and director known for his bold and often controversial works in both film and online content. He first gained attention through his short films under his platform VinCentiments, which tackled social and political issues. He made his full-length debut with #Jowable and later directed attention-grabbing titles like Sakristan, Paglaki Ko, Gusto Kong Maging Pornstar, and Revirginized. He became widely known for his Marcos-era films Maid in Malacañang and Martyr or Murderer, which stirred public debate. Despite facing criticism and even legal challenges, Yap continues to be one of the most talked-about directors in the country, believing that controversy only strengthens public interest in his work.
In a previous report by KAMI, Vic Sotto filed a complaint against Darryl Yap in connection with the film "The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma" at the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court on January 9. Vic Sotto’s name was mentioned in the controversial teaser of the film, where it was stated that Pepsi Paloma filed a case against him back in 1982. Darryl Yap said he was unsure if he would apologize to Vic Sotto and emphasized that his film aimed to tell the truth. Yap’s camp had not issued an official response to the complaint, but he shared the news on his Facebook account.
Additionally, Darryl Yap posted bail amounting to ₱20,000 after a warrant of arrest was issued against him for two counts of cyberlibel filed by Vic Sotto. The case stemmed from the teaser of the film “The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma,” where the name of the TV host-actor was mentioned. The Muntinlupa RTC Branch 203 issued the arrest warrant on March 19, 2025, but it was immediately lifted after the director posted bail. The arraignment and pre-trial conference for the case were scheduled on March 26, 2025.
