The online discourse began when a netizen questioned Mikha's fluency in Filipino, suggesting that she was feigning discomfort with Tagalog.
Mikha responded directly to the criticism via a post on X (formerly Twitter), providing context to her linguistic choices.
“Hi! Thank you for saying this, a good opportunity for me to clear things up! I’ve said before a couple of times and to people who ask me about it that I can speak fluent Tagalog, but there are times in a script or in front of the camera I get a little bulol,’ she wrote, using the Tagalog word for “stutter” or “stammer.”

She elaborated that she sometimes overthinks the appropriate Tagalog words to use, leading her to opt for English to ensure clarity and avoid sounding awkward, especially in high-pressure situations or when reading from a script.
This explanation resonates with a broader discussion within the Filipino entertainment scene, where code-switching between English and Tagalog is common.
While some perceive fluency in the native language as a marker of authenticity, others, like Mikha, navigate a multilingual reality.
As a Cebu native, Tagalog wasn't her first language, and while she learned it later, English remains a comfortable mode of expression, particularly in formal settings.
Beyond explaining her linguistic choices, Mikha also used the opportunity to advocate for kindness and understanding.
“Let's stop all the hate guys, my response was not to fuel hate but to inform and clear things up for everyone. Please spread kindness and just educate,” she urged her fans, turning a potentially divisive moment into a call for empathy and constructive dialogue.
This incident also highlights the pressures faced by P-pop idols, who are often under intense public scrutiny.
As Mikha has previously expressed, there's an expectation of perfection, and navigating public perception can be challenging.
She has acknowledged the pain of seeing loved ones criticized and the difficulty of explaining the nuances behind certain situations to those who may not understand the full context.
Despite these challenges, Mikha, alongside her fellow BINI members, continues to rise in the P-pop scene.
Known for their catchy tracks like “Pantropiko” and “Karera,” the group has garnered a significant fanbase both locally and internationally.
Mikha’s ability to articulate herself in both English and Tagalog is often seen as an asset, and her recent handling of the language criticism showcases her maturity and authenticity.
The incident serves as a reminder that language is a complex and personal matter, and judging an individual’s comfort or fluency based on limited exposure can be misleading.
