In the Philippines, deepfake technology is being used in love scams, where fraudsters create AI-generated images, videos, or audio to impersonate individuals and deceive victims into romantic relationships for financial gain. This has led to a 4,500% increase in deepfake-related identity fraud cases between 2022 and 2023, with AI-powered chatbots also playing a role in these scams. In response, authorities are launching awareness campaigns and pushing for stronger laws to combat the misuse of deepfake technology.
