Charo Santos, an esteemed actress and media executive, shared a captivating story on Instagram, reminiscing a pivotal moment in her career during the 1990s involving the comedian Dolphy.

In her "storytime" video, Charo recounted how Dolphy, known as the country's "King of Comedy," approached her upon his return from the US, expressing his desire to make a television comeback.

As a longtime admirer who had followed his shows like Buhay Artista and John & Marsha, and having co-starred with him in the film My Juan en Only, Charo was enthusiastic about his return.

"It was back in the 1990s kababalik lang ni Mang Dolphy from the US. He called me up at sabi niya, 'Charo, gusto ko bumalik sa telebisyon.' Bata pa po ako, pinapanood ko ang lahat ng mga TV shows, from Buhay Artista to John & Marsha, talagang sinubaybayan ko yan. I also became his leading lady in the movie My Juan en Only."

Determined, Charo proposed the idea to her boss at ABS-CBN, advocating for Dolphy's return, but her boss was skeptical, questioning the viability of bringing an artist who was gone for 3 years.

"I went to my boss, 'Sir! Ibalik natin si Mang Dolphy sa TV.' 'Ano ka ba? Hindi ka ba nag-iisip? Tatlong taon nang wala yan, nakalimutan na yan ng tao.' 'Sir, hindi. As far as I'm concerned, he's the King of Comedy.' Sabi ni sir, 'Malaking risk yan, eh kung hindi mag-rate yan?' 'Sir, pag hindi nag-rate ang programa ni Dolphy, you can fire me.' Parang natulala ako. Sabi ko, 'Bakit ko nasabi yun?'"

Eventually, Charo assembled a top-tier production team and carefully selected the perfect cast.

"Wala ng urungan 'to. I got the best team and gathered the right casting combination. Pag ang boss ko raw, hindi natawa in five minutes, umuwi na raw ako, mag-resign na. Sa awa ng Diyos, in the first five minutes, nadinig namin yung halakhak ng aming top boss."

Fortunately, as the episode unfolded, the sound of her boss' laughter echoed, signaling approval and relief.

"Sa pilot episode pa lang ng Home Along Da Riles, it became the number one program on primetime of ABS-CBN and it remained number one for the next seventeen years."

The sitcom, Home Along Da Riles, premiered in 1992, and quickly ascended to the number one spot on ABS-CBN's primetime lineup and its success was sustained over an impressive 11-year run.

Charo Santos is a highly respected Filipino media executive, actress, and television host. She is best known as the longtime host of Maalaala Mo Kaya, the longest-running drama anthology in the Philippines. Born on October 27, 1955, Charo rose to prominence in the entertainment industry not only for her acting but also for her work behind the scenes as an executive. She served as the President and later the CEO of ABS-CBN from 2008 to 2016. Even after stepping down as CEO, she remained active as the network's Chief Content Officer.

As previously reported by KAMI, Charo Santos posted a new video on her official Instagram page. The video featured her Batang Quiapo co-star, Cherry Pie Picache. In the reel, Charo and Cherry Pie did a hilarious dub on one of Davao Conyo's videos. Needless to say, many were impressed by the two celebrities' hilarious dubbing skills, leaving positive comments online.

Meanwhile, Charo Santos remembered Deo Endrinal on his first death anniversary. She attended the gathering commemorating the late head of Dreamscape Entertainment. On Instagram, the veteran actress and former ABS-CBN boss shared a photo giving a glimpse of the gathering. In the photo, Charo could be seen posing with her colleagues, including Kim Chiu.
