Pura Luka Vega, in a recent post on Instagram, shared a photo showing her standing in front of the Department of Justice (DOJ) building in Quezon City.

The “drag queen” said she went there Friday, September 8 of this year, to face the charges filed against her.

Before going inside the said building, Pura Luka took a selfie and shared it online, along with a caption indicating she’s being persecuted because of her beliefs.

She also reiterated that “drag is not a crime” and that the controversy she’s in has “highlighted hypocrisy and is an education on hate.”

“Nyelpi muna. Found 2 stray kittens on the bench. Let me state and reiterate that Drag is NOT a crime. This experience has highlighted hypocrisy and is an education on hate. This is hate,” Pura Luka wrote in her caption.

The drag queen also said she’s facing the charges filed against her to uphold “freedom of expression for all.”

“We are facing these charges in the hopes of upholding the freedom of expression for ALL,” she added.

She also said that the law shouldn’t be used to persecute minorities who just wanted to showcase their own “unique cultural practices.”

“The law should not be used to persecute minorities for our unique cultural practices,” she said.

Near the end of her post, she greeted the Madonna on the date widely by some in the Christian world as her birthday.

“#WWJD Happy birthday Mama Mary! ❤️ Might have some drinks later. Yun lang. ✨,” Pura Luka said.

It can be recalled that some religious organizations like the Hijos del Nazareno-Central and the Philippines for Jesus Movement have filed cases against Pura Luka for allegedly violating the law.

These include alleged violations of Article 201 Section 2 of the Revised Penal Code and Section 6 of the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

The legal provision in the Revised Penal Code centers around the prohibition on “indecent shows, publications or exhibitions,” while Section 6 of the Cybercrime Law talks about the same prohibitions on RPC “committed by, through and with the use of information and communications technologies.”

Pura Luka Vega is a Pinoy drag artist who saw herself skyrocket to national fame after her performance to the remixed version of the religious hymn, “Ama Namin,” spread widely on social media. Pura Luka, whose real name is Amadeus Fernando Pagente, said she allegedly got her drag name from a combination of names that include that of beauty queen Pura Villanueva Kalaw and singer Suzanne Vega who sang the song “Luka,” which in Tagalog word also means crazy, thus, “Pura Luka Vega.” Although she was already known in some circles, Pura Luka rose to greater heights in mid-2023 when a video of her performance of a rock remix of “Ama Namin” while wearing a Jesus Christ-inspired outfit in a bar spread online. Many called out the drag queen for her alleged “blasphemous” performance, though the drag queen insisted that it’s her way of doing “praise and worship.”

Recently, the drag queen once more took to the stage and performed for his select audience. This time around, the tour was named as "Persona Non Grata Tour." A number of his audience took to Twitter and posted videos and photos of his performances. The location of the performance was undisclosed.

In a previous article by KAMI, the drag queen is reportedly raising funds for the cases filed against him. According to the article, the funds raised will be used for Pura's transportation and food to attend the hearing of complaints against him. It can be recalled that the controversial performance of the drag queen to the remixed version of “Ama Namin,” has been widely criticized as a blasphemy.
