The veteran actress said she was watching a movie when the phone of a man seated beside her suddenly rang loudly. According to Avila, the man answered the call on loudspeaker and continued talking as though he were the only person around.

She decided to politely point out that his conversation was disturbing the moviegoing experience.
“I said, ‘maingay po, nasa sinehan kayo.’ (It is noisy. You’re in a moviehouse),” Avila recalled.

The man responded by citing his age.
“He replied with ‘pasensya na, senior na.’ (Excuse me, I’m already a senior),” she shared.
Avila then pointed out that she was also a senior citizen.
“I said ‘Senior na din ako’ (I’m also a senior),” she recounted.
After the exchange, the man stopped using his phone.
“He put off his phone,” Avila said.
While the immediate issue was resolved, the incident prompted Avila to question the man’s reasoning. She argued that being a senior should not be treated as a justification for behavior that inconveniences other people.
“SENIOR na nga, so he should have learned social manners by then,” she wrote.
For Avila, reaching senior age should ideally mean having accumulated wisdom and life lessons, including an understanding of how one’s actions affect other people in public spaces.
She further explained that even within her own family, she receives reminders about cellphone etiquette.
“Yung anak ko nga sinasabihan ako pag bright masyado ang cp ko,” she said, explaining that her child calls her out when her cellphone is too bright.
Avila agreed with her child’s point about accountability and emphasized that age should never be used as a blanket excuse for discourteous behavior.
“At ang sabi pa nya ay HINDI EXCUSE ang pagiging SENIOR sa kawalan ng manners. Precisely!” she wrote.
She added that seniors, having lived longer and accumulated more experiences, should ideally have developed stronger social awareness.
“Dapat marami nang natutunan ang senior,” Avila said.
The actress also criticized what she perceived as the wife’s lack of reaction to the man’s behavior.
“Tapos ung misis dedma sa rudeness nung asawa,” she wrote.
That observation led Avila to raise a broader question about the example adults set for younger members of their families.
“Ano ituturo nila sa mga anak o apo nila?” she asked.
Avila’s post ultimately centered on the importance of courtesy in shared spaces. Her comments suggested that consideration for others should not depend on age, and that senior citizens, like everyone else, remain responsible for observing basic manners.
Her experience also underscored the particular expectations inside movie theaters, where audiences generally go to watch films without interruptions. Loud phone conversations, especially on speakerphone, can disturb other moviegoers who have paid for the same experience.
