Pokwang reacts to P500 Noche Buena budget claim, calls out corruption

Comedienne Pokwang has joined the growing number of public figures who voice frustration over the Department of Trade and Industry’s claim that a Filipino family can prepare a Noche Buena meal for just P500.

In a series of Instagram Stories, she highlighted the struggles of ordinary workers and called out the persistent issue of corruption in the country.

In one of her posts, Pokwang focused on how systemic issues affect the affordability of basic needs. She wrote, “Kung hindi ninanakawan ang bansa at naibibigay ng tama ang para sa mga tao lalo na mga maliliit na manggagawa malamang mayaman tayo walang api at malamang kasya nga ang 500 pesos na pang noche buena.”

Her message underscored her belief that if national resources were managed properly and fairly, Filipino families—especially low-income workers—would not struggle as much, particularly during the holiday season.

Later, Pokwang shared another post, this time reposting ABS-CBN News update about former DPWH engineer Henry Alcantara turning over P110 million to the government. Over the report, she added a pointed caption referring to the returned amount and suggesting that funds like it be redirected to those in need. She wrote, “ito pong sinauling pera ng buwaya ipamigay nyo sa mahihirap ngayon pasko para di hirap ipag kasya ang 500.”

Through her posts, Pokwang echoed sentiments shared by many Filipinos who have criticized the P500 budget recommendation as unrealistic amid high commodity prices and stagnant wages. Her comments highlight widespread public frustration over economic inequality and the challenges faced by working-class families preparing for the holidays.
