Hollywood legend & activist Robert Redford dies at age 89

Robert Redford, the beloved American actor, director, and activist, has died at the age of 89. His publicist, Cindi Berger of Rogers & Cowan PMK, confirmed that he passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Utah on September 16, 2025, as reported by New York Times. No cause of death was immediately provided. The family has requested privacy as they mourn this great loss.

Redford’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from fellow actors, filmmakers, and fans around the world, who mourn not just his talent on screen but his impact off screen. Known for his commitment to environmentalism, independent film, and civic engagement, he leaves behind a legacy defined by artistry, activism, and mentorship. 
Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, Redford rose to stardom in the late 1960s in films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Barefoot in the Park, and delivered memorable performances in The Sting, All the President’s Men, The Natural, and Out of Africa. 
His directorial work was equally acclaimed—Ordinary People (1980), his first film as director, won him the Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture.  He founded the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival, making a lasting mark on independent cinema by nurturing new voices and supporting artistic freedom. 
Redford also received numerous honors including a Presidential Medal of Freedom, an Honorary Academy Award, and recognition for his environmental advocacy and contributions to culture. He is survived by his wife Sibylle Szaggars, his daughters, and grandchildren. 
Aside from Robert Redford, another Hollywood icon who passed away this year was Gene Hackman. Oscar-winner Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead inside their home in Santa Fe. Also found deceased inside their New Mexico home was their dog, reports say.
In another report, Oscar-winner actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa's cause of deaths have been revealed. The information was released in a press conference by Dr. Heather Jarrell, chief medical investigator for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. According to Dr. Jarrell, Hackman died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease which was complicated by his Alzheimer’s disease.
