He thanked musical director Troy Laureta for encouraging him to take on the song, saying he now sees it as a tribute to the man who helped define a golden era of OPM.

Hajji Alejandro, fondly known as the “Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala,” was one of the pioneers of OPM in the 1970s and 80s, known for timeless hits and a charm that transcended generations. His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of Filipino music lovers and artists alike.
Hajji Alejandro was a Pinoy singer and actor Alaminos, Pangasinan. Born in December 26, 1954, Hajji became a major pop star in the 1970s and 1980s. Like another OPM legend, Basil Valdez, Hajji also came from the group Circus Band. He was also the first winner of the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival with his song interpretation of “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika” composed by Ryan Cayabyab. He also won the grand prize at the Seoul International Music Festival in South Korea. Hajji died April 22, 2025 after a battle with colon cancer.
The OPM icon passed at 70 after a battle with stage 4 colon cancer, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music. Daughter Barni Alejandro shares emotional tribute on Instagram, calling her father her “first love” and “hero.” Hajji's children include singer Rachel Alejandro, chef Barni, and Mojofly drummer Ali Alejandro, from different relationships. Entertainment industry mourns another loss, following the recent deaths of Delia Razon, Gloria Romero, Pilita Corrales, and Nora Aunor.
It can be recalled that Hajji has been confined to the hospital recently. A video of him at the hospital with his mother was shared by Arnold Clavio online. In his Instagram post, Arnold revealed that Hajji had Stage 4 Colon Cancer and that it spread. Needless to say, many, including Sharon Cuneta, left a comment on Arnold's viral post.
