Actress Nikki Valdez looked back on a painful chapter in her life as she recalled the harsh public scrutiny she faced over two decades ago during her relationship with actor Troy Montero.

In Monday’s episode of Fast Talk With Boy Abunda on GMA, Nikki opened up about the negative comments she received at the time, revealing how the judgment from strangers left a lasting impact on her.

“during that time, it was his peak, the peak of his career and ang daming na-shock na parang ‘Ha? Bakit siya?’ Bakit daw ako?” Nikki shared, remembering how people questioned why someone like Troy would date her. “Umabot pa nga sa point na may reference pa sila na ang foreigner ay mahilig sa kamukha ko. May ganoon noong time na ’yon.”

She also recounted how her older brother, then in college, came across a televised interview where Nikki’s looks were openly criticized.

“Naalala ko sinabi ng Kuya ko na napanood niya ’yung isang interview sa TV na ’yun na nga na parang ‘Bakit si Nikki Valdez? Ang mga foreigner talaga mahihilig sa mukhang ganyan.’ So nasaktan ’yung Kuya ko for me,” she shared.

The actress admitted that the experience left her traumatized, especially since she was simply in love at the time and not prepared for the cruelty she faced.

“Na-trauma talaga ako. Siguro kung that happened in this generation, ’yung sinasabi nila na mental health ko bagsak, negative talaga kasi hindi ko alam paano umabot sa ganon. Eh siyempre noong time na ’yon, in love lang tayo, tao lang naman tayo,” Nikki said.

Troy Montero and Nikki Valdez were in a relationship in the early 2000s. Both have since moved on, but Nikki’s recent reflection serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy — especially when it comes to public figures simply living their lives.

The said Korean drama has already ended on May 28, 2024, and it looked like it hit them differently. He uploaded a video of their reactions during the last episode, and he wrote, "GOSH, I didn’t think…#LovelyRunner was gonna hit like that."
