Fact check: Can a victim of bullying get financial compensation?
- A Facebook post claimed that anti-bullying law requires financial compensation to the victim
- However, this claim was declared false by the law’s author
- There is no mention of any financial compensation in the law

Many social media posts regarding Anti-Bullying Law have been buzzing the Internet. KAMI learned from ABS-CBN News that in a Facebook post, it has been stated that if someone calls another person “fat”, that bully can be sued and the victim can get P15,000 for financial compensation as allegedly stated in RA10627.
The post had a caption saying, “Mag open ka na ng bank account.. Dahil sigurado yayaman ka dito!”
In the picture, it stated that “Pag sinabihan ka ng mataba, may karapatan kang kasuhan o singilin siya ng 15,000 thousand – RA10627”
However, this claim is false.
RA10627 or Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 signed by former President Benigno Aquino III did not mention anything about financial compensation. The law states that all elementary and secondary schools should have anti-bullying policies to address bullying in their institutions as stated by Official Gazette.
For the penalties, it could be written warnings or suspension or expulsion from school and no financial compensation at all.

In a report by ABS-CBN News, law author Senator Sonny Angara’s media relations officer stated that the claim for financial compensation is also false.
“This is indeed a fake news. RA 10627 or the Anti-Bullying Law DOES NOT allow people to demand P15,000 payment or file a case against those who call them fat or overweight,” Shielo Mendoza stated.
