Recently, however, hospitals in the NCR report running out of beds due to the sudden rise of COVID cases, particularly in the Metro Manila area.

Because of this, patients and their watchers had to endure the cold and discomfort of sleeping on cigarette cartons functioning as makeshift beds on the floors of the hospitals’ corridors.

The same thing is happening at the NKTI. A photo sent by a netizen to Inquirer, which the newspaper published, showed patients and persons that look like their watchers, show them sleeping on the floor.

Others were resting on their wheelchairs with dextroses attached to their arms.

The sudden surge of COVID-19 cases, particularly in the NCR, is stretching the limits of hospitals, both in facilities and manpower. Hospitals have started turning away patients for lack of rooms, though there are patients who succeeded in getting admitted, but still, they ended up being treated in open areas and on the floor. With more than 8,000 new cases of COVID on an almost daily basis since the end of March, hospitals say new emergency facilities are needed.
