KAMI learned that there are ways or safety tips that both the motorcycle rider and passenger can do to prevent accidents.

In a report by GMA News’ Stand for Truth, as per Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), there were about 14, 707 motorcycle road crashes incidents starting from January to August 2018.

Meanwhile, there had been 124 recorded deaths, 6,608 non-fatal injuries, and 7,975 cases that resulted in damaged properties.

Angkas has been the leading motorcycle transport service in the Philippines. It claimed that it has insurance for its passengers and has a safety record of 99.9%.

However, the “habal-habal” riders do not have insurance for their customers.

While some commuters think riding motorcycles is dangerous, they still opt to do it because of the terrible traffic in Metro Manila.

According to Engineer Alfredo Suansing, the Secretary-General of the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership (PGRSP), motorcycle riders should wear the proper safety gear including the helmet, gloves, knee pads, and arm pads.

“Mayroong standard gear para sa pag-mo-motor, that’s added protection sa body mo nga dahil exposed ka. May mga paddings and everything,” he said.

Aside from wearing proper safety gear, the most important tip is to be a responsible driver and rider while on the road.

Keep safe and driver responsibly!
