Today, November 5, marks the World Tsunami Awareness Day.
KAMI learned that there are some tips to survive a tsunami.
In a Facebook post by the Philippine Star, the signs to look out for are the following:
- A felt earthquake
- Unusual sea-level
- Rumbling sound of approaching waves
How to prepare for a tsunami?
According to the Red Cross, some steps can be done to brace one’s self before the tsunami. Here are some tips:
- Make and ready your emergency preparedness kit
- Create a household evacuation plan
- Be informed of the community’s risk and response plans
What to do?
To escape the tsunami, go as high and as far as you can. Do not stay in low-lying areas after a felt earthquake.
Do not go down the beach to watch for a tsunami. If a person can see the wave, it will be hard to escape.
It is also important to know the difference between a tsunami warning and a tsunami watch.
A tsunami warning means that a tsunami may have generated or could be close to the area.
On the other hand, a tsunami watch means a tsunami has not been verified yet. However, it could exist and it may be at least an hour away.
