Indeed, 2019 is a mournful year for the Philippine showbiz industry as several prominent artists passed away.
KAMI learned of the following who greatly contributed to the industry of television, cinema, and music.
1. Joey “Pepe” Smith
Famously known as a Pinoy rock legend, Pepe Smith is one of the pioneers of the original Filipino rock music.
2. Armida Siguion-Reyna
Armida was popularly known for her show Aawitan Kita, the longest-running musical show on television which promoted Filipino songs and kundimans.
Chokoleit is a comedian who is best known for his role as Pearly Shell in the Philippine television series Marina.
4. Eddie Garcia
Also known as Manoy, Eddie Garcia is a veteran actor who had over 600 film and television roles spanning over seven decades for his life’s work.
5. Amalia Fuentes
Dubbed as the “Elizabeth Taylor of the Philippines”, Amalia Fuentes is famous for her showbiz roles since the 1960s. She is also the aunt of popular actors Aga Muhlach and Nino Muhlach.
6. Gary Lising
Gary Lising is a veteran comedian who is widely known for his green jokes on his film and television roles.
Bentong is a popular comedian famous for the noontime shows Wowowee and Magandang Tanghali Bayan.
8. Tony Mabesa
Tony Mabesa is a veteran stage actor and theater educator who contributed a lot to the industry.
9. Mona Lisa
One of the most renowned actresses before and after World War II, Mona Lisa is an award-winning performer who had been in the industry since 1930.
10. Sophia Corullo
The child actress Sophia Corullo is a 6-year-old who has gained recognition after joining It’s Showtime’s contest “Mini Me”. The young star died because of dengue.
