Explainer: Harmful effects of drinking more than 4 cups or too much coffee

Most Filipinos are fond of drinking coffee, especially in the morning to wake them up. But, how much is too much coffee?

KAMI learned that there are harmful effects on drinking more than 4 cups of coffee a day.

In a report by the Philippine Star, drinking more than 4 cups of coffee is “possibly unsafe.” It may cause the following:

  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Irregular heartbeats

How much is too much coffee?

According to the health website Mayo Clinic, drinking up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day is still considered safe for most healthy adults. It is equivalent to 4 cups of coffee or 10 cans of soda or two “energy shot” drinks.

While drinking coffee for adults is safe, it is not that good for children. Even adolescents should limit their caffeine intake.

Here are the other harmful side effects of drinking too much coffee:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Frequent urination or inability to control urination
  • Upset stomach
  • Muscle tremors

Drinking coffee is safe for adults. However, be mindful of the caffeine intake and always know when it is too much.
