Recently, the Department of Health Region 7 has released information about the number of HIV cases recorded in Central Visayas starting from January to May 2019.

KAMI learned that Cebu has the highest record in Central Visayas with 69 cases of HIV during the month of May only.
In a report by Rappler, Cebu has a total of 333 cases recorded from January to May. Meanwhile, Bohol has 29 reported cases, and Negros Oriental has 31 infections. All in all, 396 people tested positive for HIV in Central Visayas.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an infection that weakens the immune system of a person and its defense systems against infections.
Immunodeficiency increases the risks of infections, cancers, and other diseases that people with a healthy immune system can fight against.

The symptoms of HIV could vary on the stage of the infection. For the first few weeks, people infected with this virus could develop the following:
- Sore throat

HIV can be transmitted through the exchange of body fluids from an infected person like blood, breast milk, semen, and vaginal secretion.
How can you prevent HIV?
- Male and female condom use
- Testing and counseling for HIV
- Testing and counseling, linkages to tuberculosis care
- Voluntary medical male circumcision
- Antiretroviral drug use for prevention
- Elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV
