Today, September 26, 2019, marks the 10th year since Tropical Storm “Ondoy” lashed the Philippines and changed the lives of thousands of Filipinos.
KAMI learned that the traumatized volunteers and leaders during Ondoy have already stepped up.
In a report by the Inquirer (authors Jhesset O. Enano and Matthew Reysio-Cruz), chief of Marikina City’s DRRM office Dave David said that the two terms that could describe their Ondoy experience are “shock” and “awe.”

Due to the huge impact Ondoy has made, there were training and seminars conducted including basic life support, first aid, and basic water rescue for disaster response.
“Because of the lessons learned from Ondoy, the [residents’] awareness levels are much higher… What we share with them is experiential, not conceptual or theoretical,” David said.
On September 26, 2009, Ondoy brought rains for 13 hours straight, a month worth of rains. It made landfall near the boundary of Quezon and Aurora provinces.
It has been reported that about 4.9 million people were affected by Ondoy and there were 464 fatalities recorded. There was also an outbreak of leptospirosis.
