US Senator Rubio urges PH gov’t to free De Lima
- US Senator Marco Rubio has called for the release of opposition Senator Leila de Lima
- Rubio said that De Lima has been imprisoned over “bogus charges”
- He also urged the PH government to release De Lima “unconditionally”

United States Senator Marco Rubio has commented over the imprisonment of opposition Senator Leila de Lima.
KAMI learned that Rubio has called for the release of De Lima after she was detained for alleged drug-related charges.
In a report by GMA News Online, Rubio shared his thought on social media.
“Philippine Senator Leila de Lima, a critic of extrajudicial killings under Duterte's so-called “war on drugs,” has spent the last two years in prison on bogus charges,” Rubio wrote on Twitter.
“I call on the Philippine government to unconditionally release her #FreeLeilaNow #ExpressionNOTOppression,” he added.

It has also been reported that Rubio was one of the five US senators who filed a resolution which condemned De Lima’s detention.
As previously reported by KAMI, the family and supporters of De Lima wished for the senator’s release during her 60th birthday celebration.

Leila Norma Eulalia Josefa Magistrado de Lima earlier served as the chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights and Secretary of the Department of Justice during the administration of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
In February 2017, De Lima was detained over the allegations that she allowed the drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison while she was still the justice secretary.
