- President Rodrigo Duterte has already appointed Gerald Bantag as the new director-general of the Bureau of Corrections
- Bantag is currently facing 10 counts of murder charges
- However, the President has defended his decision to appoint Bantag
President Rodrigo Duterte has already revealed his choice to assume the post of the director-general in the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
KAMI learned that President Duterte has appointed Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in MIMAROPA head Gerald Bantag to be the new BuCor chief, replacing Nicanor Faeldon.
In a report by CNN Philippines, the President has chosen Bantag despite the 10 counts of murder charges he is currently facing following the death of 10-high profile inmates after the explosion that happened in Parañaque City Jail in August 2016.
President Duterte has defended his decision to appoint Bantag. He believes that Bantag is innocent.
"I don't think that he did it. If he did, then baka ma-convict siya. But in the meantime, gusto ko siya kasi nagtatapon ng granada daw,” Bantag said.
“All the things that people are saying, huwag mong gawin. All the things that are obnoxious, huwag mong gawin,” he added.

According to the report by ABS-CBN News, the Palace said that Bantag was chosen "based on his professional competence and honesty."
"The Palace is behind the President's decision and is confident that DG Bantag will continue the administration’s campaign against corruption as he spearheads reform initiatives in the Bureau," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.
In a previous report by KAMI, Senator Bong Go suggested that the next BuCor chief should be a “killer.” He said that he had a person in mind that was suited for the job. However, he did not give any name at that time.
Gerald Bantag used to be the warded of the Parañaque and Manila City Jails. He was also the regional director of the BJMP in the Southwestern Tagalog Region.
