Sister Mary John Mananzan has expressed her support over the SOGIE bill that aims to protect the LGBTQ+ community.
KAMI learned that Sister Mananzan said that the proposed measure does not give any “special rights” to the LGBTQ+ members.
In a report by the ABS-CBN News, Sister Mananzan explained her side as a religious woman.
“I don’t see that this bill is giving any special right to this group. They are just saying that the rights of everybody should also be applied to them,” Sister Mananzan said.
“As a religious woman I believe in the respect, compassion, and reverence for all persons because I believe they were all made in the image and likeness of God,” she added.

Sister Mananzan explained that those who express their gender identity are prone to discrimination.
"Even if we are really against the discrimination of anybody, sometimes you have to focus on groups of people that are actually suffering discrimination and violence,” she said.
In a previous report by KAMI, Senator Nancy Binay has questioned the need to pass the SOGIE bill in the Senate. She said that the discussion about discrimination should be universal.
The controversial SOGIE bill sparked anew following the incident involving transgender woman Gretchen Diez. She was barred from using the ladies’ restroom and was detained by the police.
