President Rodrigo Duterte raised the arbitral win of the Philippines over the South China Sea during his bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

KAMI learned that the Chinese President refused to recognize the victory of the Philippines.

In a report by CNN Philippines (author Robert Vergara), Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo explained that President Duterte was “steadfast” in raising the concerns over the West Philippine Sea.

"President Duterte was also steadfast in raising with President Xi concerns central to the Philippines' claim in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), which include the ruling held by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague. He said that the arbitral award is final, binding and not subject to appeal," Panelo said.

"In response, President Xi reiterated his government’s position of not recognizing the arbitral ruling as well as not budging from its position," he added.

As reported by ABS-CBN News (author Davinci Maru), Panelo explained that despite the different positions of both presidents, they will not diminish the ties between the two countries.

"Both President Duterte and President Xi agreed that while their variant positions will have to remain, their differences however need not derail nor diminish the amity between the two countries. They shared the view that the contentious issue is not the sum total of the Philippines-Chinese bilateral relationship," Panelo said.

In 2016, the Philippines won the case at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that rejected China’s claim that it has sovereignty over the most parts of the South China Sea.
