Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has commented over the supposed early release of former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez who was convicted for rape and murder.
KAMI learned that according to Dela Rosa, Sanchez deserves a second chance.
In a report by the ABS-CBN News, Sanchez is among the 11,000 convicts who were granted an early release for “good conduct.” The former mayor was sentenced reclusion perpetua for 40 years. However, he is being released after 24 years of imprisonment.
In a phone interview, Dela Rosa explained the side of the Sanchez family and the victims’ family.
“Talagang galit ‘yung pamilya dahil double murder ‘yon, lalo na ‘yung kaso nung sa Caluan mayor ‘di ba?” Dela Rosa said.
“Pero naman, on the part naman din sa family ng Caluan mayor, sa kanila naman, ang kanilang fact there, sana mabigyan din ng tyansa at pangalawang buhay,” he added.
“So ganyan lang ‘yan, give and take ‘yan para sa both sides. Masakit para dun sa naging biktima at matamis para dun sa pamilya ng offender, ganon,” he continued.

The senator also mentioned that he was not able to meet the former mayor personally. However, some officers claimed that Sanchez has become a “changed man.”
"According to corrections officers, nagbait na daw [si Sanchez]. In fact, nakikita nila na nagpapalda na nga daw, so changed man na talaga siya, changed man," Dela Rosa said.
"Bumait na, hindi na siga,” he added.
On March 11, 1995, Sanchez was convicted over the rape and slay of University of the Philippines Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta and the slay of her companion Allan Gomez in June 1993.
Senator Bato dela Rosa was elected during the May 2019 elections. He was the Philippine National Police Chief from 2016 to 2018. He was also appointed as the Director General of the Bureau of Corrections in 2018.
