Rain or Shine stops late Alaska rally, edges closer to PBA Title

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters fended off a late-game rally by the Alaska Aces to essay a 112-108 win in Game 3 of the PBA Commissioner's Cup finals on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Rain or Shine squandered a 27-point lead in the third quarter and made sloppy plays down the stretch. This gave the Aces a chance to creep back in the game, but it was a case of a little too late for Alaska. A three-point play by Rob Dozier and a quick triple by RJ Jazul were the Aces’ last baskets in the game.

JR Quiñahan led Rain or Shine with 18 points, shooting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Jericho Cruz added 17 points, and Pierre Henderson-Niles posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Dozier scored 23 markers for Alaska, while Calvin Abueva poured in 20 points. Chris Banchero and Jazul also had 15 and 14 points, respectively. Alaska outscored ROS in the fourth quarter, 36-17, but being down by 20 plus points in the game took a toll on the Aces.

The E-Painters now have a commanding 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven matchup against the Aces. A win on Friday will give them a second PBA title in franchise history after four bridesmaid finishes in the past seasons. Alaska, on the other hand, will try to avoid a sweep and imitate what the San Miguel Beermen did to them. The Beermen made history after coming back from 0-3 down en route to winning the Philippine Cup championship against the Aces.
