Rep. Roman reacts over Sotto’s ‘Homo sapiens’ remark

Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman has commented over the recent remark of Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III over the term “LGBTQIA+.”

KAMI learned that Roman believed Sotto was just “trying to be funny” when he made the remark.

"I think Senator Tito Sotto was trying to be funny and was his usual self. But the term Homo sapiens is irrelevant, really," Roman said in an interview on ANC’s Headstart.

In a report by the GMA News Online, Roman said that the LGBTQ community just wants a comfort room that will cater to people’s gender identity.

"We want a toilet that would respond to the needs of all people regardless of their gender identity," Roman said.

In a previous report by KAMI, Sotto was confused with the term “LGBTQIA+” and suggested to just use “Homo sapiens.”

The passage of the SOGIE Bill or the Anti-Discrimination Bill is still being discussed in Congress. Meanwhile, Sen. Risa Hontiveros urged her colleagues to approve the proposed measure.

Transgender woman Gretchen Diaz was detained by police after she was barred from using the ladies’ comfort room by a cleaning staff. The incident drew flak from the netizens, celebrities, and even lawmakers.

Geraldine Roman was elected as the Representative of the 1st District of Bataan in 2016. She was the first openly transgender woman who became a member of the Congress.
