Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has commented over the issue that a transgender woman was barred from using a ladies’ comfort room in a mall.
KAMI learned that Belmonte condemned the “discrimination” that happened at Farmer’s Plaza mall on Tuesday.
“We condemn this kind of discrimination towards members of the LGBT+ community,” Belmonte wrote on her Facebook page.
Belmonte also emphasized that Quezon City was the first to pass the Gender Fair Ordinance which aims to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ members.
“Sa batas na ito, ipinagbabawal ng lungsod ang lahat ng uri ng diskriminasyon, at binibigyan ng proteksyon at paggalang ang dignidad at karapatang-pantao ng lahat, lalung-lalo na ang LGBT+,” she said.

The mayor also said that the mall did not follow the ordinance which stated that all government offices, private, and commercial establishments should have a designated “All-Gender Toilets.”
She also assured the members of the LGBTQ+ that their rights are being protected in Quezon City.
“We do not support any kind of violence and discrimination in our city. Sa ating LGBT+ community, protektado ang karapatan ninyo sa QC,” Belmonte said.
In a previous report by KAMI, transgender woman Gretchen Custodio Diez said that she was prevented from using the women’s comfort room and she was discriminated by the mall personnel.
Diez was set free after the mall management dropped the case against her. However, Diez is determined to file charges against the mall that violated the Quezon City ordinance.
