At least 31 people killed in Iloilo-Guimaras sea tragedy, PCG says

- The Philippine Coast Guard said that about 31 people were killed by the Iloilo-Guimaras sea tragedy

- However, the figures are still being verified

- PCG also said that a squall or sudden violent winds may have caused the incident

The authorities are still investigating the tragedy that happened in Iloilo-Guimaras sea over the weekend.

KAMI learned that 3 ferries were hit by a squall or sudden violent winds and the death toll has risen to 31.

In an interview in DZMM, Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commander Armand Balilo said that the recent report he received stated that about 31 people died and 3 more people are still missing.

However, he also mentioned that another report stated that 27 were killed and 6 other people are missing. Therefore, the figures are still being investigated.

"Ang naging cause na sinasabi ay iyung biglang lakas ng alon o iyung squall. Ang sabi nga doon sa maritime community, iyung 'subasko' na tinatawag... May mga bahay din na naapektuhan nitong parang ipo-ipo na tumama sa area," Balilo said.

As reported by GMA News Online, the 3 ferries were carrying a total of 96 passengers and crew. However, Balilo clarified that the third ferry did not carry any passengers and its five crew members survived.
