President Rodrigo Duterte has officially vetoed the Security of Tenure Bill on Friday, the proposed measure seeks to end the contractualization in the country.
KAMI learned that on Thursday night, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said that President Duterte has rejected the bill. However, he took it back a few moments after and said that the President was still studying the pros and cons of the proposed law.
In a report by Manila Bulletin, Panelo has confirmed on Friday that the President has rejected the bill.
The President stated in the veto message that he wanted to balance the interests of both the employers and the employees.
"Our goal, however, has always been to target the abuse, while leaving the business free to engage in those practices beneficial to management and the workforce," it read.
Senators Joel Villanueva and Juan Miguel Zubiri have commented on the vetoed bill.
"I’m saddened by the Veto of the Security of Tenure bill. It makes no sense to me why Malacañang would declare it a priority measure then just to Veto it after its approval," Zubiri said.
"Ngunit ang katotohanan, minsan ay mas matimbang ang mga makapangyarihan at naghaharing-uri. Ang pagka veto ng ENDO ay isa sa mga manipistasyon ng mga ganitong pagkakataon," Villanueva stated.

The proposed measure seeks to require companies to regularize all of their employees, except for those who are on probationary status.
As previously reported by KAMI, President Duterte certified the Security of Tenure Bill as urgent. The President wrote a letter to Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III for immediate enactment of the bill.
