- Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney joined the legal counsel defending Maria Ressa
- Clooney said that she would help vindicate the rights of Ressa
- She also commended Ressa for being a “courageous journalist”
Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and a team of international legal counsels are now working with the camp of Rappler CEO and journalist Maria Ressa to defend her from the charges she has been facing.
KAMI learned that Clooney has decided to take the cases of Ressa for she believed that she was a “courageous journalist” for standing up against human rights abuses.
"Maria Ressa is a courageous journalist who is being persecuted for reporting the news and standing up to human rights abuses," Clooney explained, as reported by CNN.
"We will pursue all available legal remedies to vindicate her rights and defend press freedom and the rule of law in the Philippines,” she added.
Since 2018, Ressa and Rappler have been facing 11 charges. She was charged with cyber libel and tax evasion for her news site.
In a previous report by KAMI, Ressa was also featured in the newly-released music video of pop icon Madonna titled, “I Rise.”
Amal Clooney is the wife of Hollywood actor George Clooney. In 2019, she was appointed as the special envoy on media freedom by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
