- Duterte said that conducting oil exploration in the WPS could cause “trouble” from China
- Xi insisted on restoring the friendship between the Philippines and China
President Rodrigo Duterte recently revealed what Chinese President Xi Jinping told him when he said that the Philippines would conduct oil exploration in Malampaya area.
KAMI learned that in 2016, Xi mentioned to Duterte that digging oil in the West Philippine Sea could cause “trouble.”
In a report by the Inquirer (author Nestor Corrales), Duterte narrated his past conversation with Xi during the bilateral meeting in Beijing last October 2016.
“Sabi ko, I’m going there to dig oil.’ Ang sagot ni Xi Jinping in whisper, tanungin mo sila, ‘Alam mo, Mayor Duterte, we just restored our friendship. It was not good for a number of years. Pero huwag na muna tayong pag-usapan.’ Sabi niya, ‘Let’s talk about helping each other, trade, commerce, investment, China can help,’” Duterte said.
“No, no, balik ako sabi ko, ‘I want my oil because that is ours there.’ And he said, ‘No, because you know that could mean trouble,’” he added.
In a previous report by KAMI, Duterte stated that China will continue fishing in the Philippine exclusive economic zone because they are “friends” with the Philippines.
However, critics of Duterte said that by allowing China, he is violating the Constitution.
