- President Rodrigo Duterte claimed that the Philippines has no sovereignty over its own exclusive economic zone
- However, Florin Hilbay opposed this and said that the country has sovereignty over the EEZ
- Former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales also explained what was stated in the Constitution
President Rodrigo Duterte claimed that the Philippines cannot assert sovereignty over its own Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
KAMI learned that the President insisted that our sovereignty is good for “12 miles” only.
In a report by the GMA News (author Dona Magsino), President Duterte said that no country has sovereignty over its economic zone.
“Tayo dinemanda natin ang China during panahon ni Aquino which was right. Nanalo tayo, sabi ng arbitral court sa Pilipinas 'yan," Duterte said.
"Hindi binigay sa atin 'yung sovereignty. Ang sovereignty is only 12 miles. Ang economic zone wala tayong sovereignty," he added.
President Duterte was talking about the international tribunal ruling in 2016.
"No country in the world has a sovereignty sa kaniyang economic zone. It is not a question of sovereignty. Ang recognized lang 'yung 12,” the President noted.
“We cannot drive them away because they have insisted na kanila," he said.
Meanwhile, former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay emphasized that the Republic Act 8550 specifically said that the country has sovereignty and jurisdiction over the “Philippine Waters” or all the bodies of water within the Philippine territory, including the 200-nautical miles exclusive economic zone.
Former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales also mentioned that the Philippines has sovereignty over its exclusive economic zone, as stated in the Constitution.
In a previous report by KAMI, President Duterte said that China will not stop fishing in the Philippine exclusive economic zone because they are “friends” with the Philippines.
