- Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio disagreed with the recent statement of President Rodrigo Duterte
- Carpio said that it is unconstitutional to allow China to keep fishing in Philippine EEZ
- Senator Ping Lacson also commented on the issue
Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio opposed the recent remark of President Rodrigo Duterte about the Chinese crew fishing in the Philippine exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
KAMI learned that Carpio reminded the government that it cannot allow China to continue fishing in the Philippine EEZ.
“The Philippine Government cannot allow Chinese fishermen to fish in Phillippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the West Philippine Sea because it will violate the Constitution,” Carpio said in a statement.
As stated in Section 2, Article XII of the 1987 Constitution:
“The State shall protect the nation’s marine wealth in its archipelagic waters, territorial sea, and exclusive economic zone, and reserve its use and enjoyment exclusively to Filipino citizens.”
Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson also quoted that part to answer the remark of President Rodrigo Duterte.
As previously reported by KAMI, President Duterte was asked if China would stop fishing in the Philippine EEZ after the ramming incident. However, the President said that China would not do that because they are “friends” with the Philippines.
