- DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said that the teachers should not be ashamed of their salaries
- Despite the salary increase talks, Briones said that teaching is not all about money
- She also mentioned that the salary hike should be “carefully studied”
Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones reminded the teachers, most especially the public school teachers, that teaching is “not all about the money.”
KAMI learned that amid the salary increase being urged by the teachers, Briones mentioned that teachers should not be ashamed of their salaries and be proud of their profession.
In a report by the Manila Bulletin (author Merlina Hernando-Malipot), Briones welcomed the first day of School Year (SY) 2019-2020 at Signal Village National High School (SVNHS) and Comembo Elementary School (CoES).
When asked about the salary increase for teachers during her dialogue, Briones emphasized her stand that it should be “carefully studied.”
She noted that it will cost the government P150 billion for a P10,000 salary hike of the teachers.
Briones also urged the teachers to remain committed to their public service, and that the department is working on initiatives to enhance the welfare of the teachers.
In a previous report by KAMI, some teachers of Bacoor National High School turned the comfort rooms into faculty rooms that should fit 11 teachers due to lack of facilities.
However, Briones said that the teachers did that because it was more “dramatic” and “touching.”
