Beaming with determination, a transwoman student in Bulacan marks her name in their university as she will graduate as cumlaude at Bulacan State University, in Malolos City.

Not only that, Russel Quiño will be the first-ever transwoman who will graduate in the said university with Latin Honors.

But like others, Russel, a BS Psychology student, also struggles before she got her "title".

In an interview with KAMI through Facebook Messenger, Russel recalls how she faced discrimination while struggling to finish college.

"Nung nag-uumpisa palang po ako sa university namin, we are not allowed to cross-dress and make our hair long na parang nao-oppress yung expression namin especially ako na gusto ko na mag-pambabae at magpahaba ng buhok since I see myself as a woman."

"There will be times na haharangin ako sa gate ng mga guards kukunin id ko at kung ano ano pa sinasabi at minsan nakikipagpatintero pa ako." Russel told KAMI.

She also admits that there were times that she would think to just quit because of inequity from others.

"The 1st 2 years in my university would be my struggle, kase due to discrimination and judgments from students, guards, and even professors hindi na ako nakakapag focus sa studies ko, muntik na ako mag drop no'n kasi pinapagupitan yung hair ko."

But Russel was thankful that an organization was built for them to help people like her with the discrimination they were facing.

She eventually gained confidence and made a promise to excel in her league.

She firmly believes that being true to their selves will help them stand out in their chosen field.

"From there, I made a promise to myself that before I leave the university, I will make a difference," Russel said.

After graduation, Russel plans to take the Licensure board exam. The proud transwoman also aims to apply in one of the famous airline in the Philippines.

She also told KAMI that she is very grateful to her family who became her inspiration to achieve more and made it to the top.

Congratulations Russel!

Meanwhile, in a previous report from KAMI, a transwoman also in PUP who faced discrimination finishes college as Magna Cumlaude.
