The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that they are monitoring a possible magnitude 8 earthquake after the earthquake swarms that happened in Surigao Del Norte last Friday.

KAMI learned that even if PHIVOLCS cannot predict when and where earthquakes will happen, they can still determine its magnitude.

Solidum mentioned that when it comes to the trenches, the segment offshore of Surigao provinces could cause a magnitude 8 earthquake.

Matagal na po naming sinasabi yan," he said.

In a report by the Inquirer (author Christia Marie Ramos), tsunamis would be most likely to occur if the magnitude 8 quake happens.

However, Solidum emphasized that even if they have not yet recorded an earthquake pattern that could lead to a magnitude 8 quake, they are still monitoring the possibility and urge the people to be prepared.

“Although di natin masasabi kung talagang ito’y dederetso sa ganun, sana hindi, ang kadalasan ay tumitigil lang na ganyan lang pero we don’t know so we have to be prepared always,” he said.

As previously reported by KAMI, some items could be included in one’s emergency kit as preparation if any disaster happens. There are also tips and emergency hotlines listed that could be helpful.
